The play Silent Sky, being presented at the Coolidge Theater in Wellsboro, PA, May 10-18, is about Henrietta Leavitt and her fellow woman astronomical “computers” at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900’s. Discoveries by Leavitt included how the brightness variability of some stars could be used to measure their relative distance to earth. This was key to future work on mapping the universe. Some scientists, including Edwin Hubble, said that Leavitt deserved the Nobel Prize for her work.
The program will include a talk on Leavitt’s contributions to science, some readings from the play by the actors, a planetarium show, and telescope observing in the parking lot afterward if the skies are clear. Space-themed snacks will be provided! |

A decade before women gained the right to vote, Henrietta Leavitt and her fellow women “computers” transformed the science of astronomy. In the Harvard Observatory, Leavitt found 2,400 new variable stars and made important discoveries about their fluctuating brightness, enabling fellow scientists to map the Milky Way and beyond. This inspiring drama explores the determination, passion and sacrifice of the women who redefined our understanding of the cosmos.

“Sha la la, Joseph, you’re doing fine! You and your dreamcoat, ahead of your time!” One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers and the coat of many colors. Told entirely through song with the help of a main character Narrator, the musical follows preferred son Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family.

Six strangers in a lonely farmhouse, surrounded by brain-eating zombies – what could go wrong?
Night of the Living Dead™ Live is a fun and hilarious re-imagining of George A. Romero’s legendary classic. Set in 1968 and presented in all black and white, it literally feels like the film has been brought to life and placed onstage. The play lovingly examines the movie itself, the period in which it was made, and the film’s undying influence on the horror genre. |
