I love gritty, exploratory plays; plays that dig deep and don't answer all the questions; plays that offer lingering ponderings. I remember seeing Red at the Geva Theatre in Rochester and sitting there drained of energy at the end of the play. It's a powerful two-character play that engages from the very first moment of an intense painter staring at one of his paintings: “What do you see?”
The play is more than a brief slice of the life of painter Mark Rothko. It explores the nature of art and our connection to it. We're pairing this two-character play (Rothko and a young assistant) with The Rembrandt, another play that deals with the process of creating art, in which we literally enter the art.
