Hamilton-Gibson Productions is seeking a choir director for the community training choir—Choir TOO—of  singers in grades 2-4. This choir is the preparation for entrance into the HG Treble Choir of singers in grades 5-8.

The HG Choir TOO director provides artistic and educational leadership for a welcoming choir serving children in grades 2-4 of varied backgrounds and musical experience. The director plans and leads rehearsals, develops healthy young voices, selects age-appropriate repertoire, conducts performances, and creates an inclusive environment where children build confidence, musicianship, and a lasting enjoyment of singing.

 

Key Responsibilities

In collaboration with the Artistic Director:

--Plan and lead engaging, well-structured rehearsals that include warm-ups, vocal instruction, musicianship development, repertoire preparation, and community-building activities.

--Teach healthy, age-appropriate vocal technique, including posture, breathing, tone, diction, pitch, rhythm, harmony, expression, and stage presence.

--Select diverse, high-quality repertoire suited to the the singers' ages, abilities, vocal development, and cultural backgrounds.

--Encourage individual growth while building ensemble skills, cooperation, and responsibility.

--Conduct the choir at three concerts during the school year.

--Assist with organizing the choral library.

--Communicate schedules, expectations, concert information to singers and caregivers.

--Develop constructive relationships with families and respond professionally to questions and concerns.

--Help in the recruiting and retaining of singers.

--Represent the choir positively in interactions with schools, arts organizations, funders, venues and community partners.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED

--Strong conducting, rehearsal-planning, vocal-pedagogy, and musicianship skills.

--Knowledge of children's vocal development and age-appropriate teaching methods.

--Ability to read scores and teach vocal parts accurately.

--Effective communication, organization, leadership, and rehearsal-management skills.

--Ability to work collaboratively with children, caregivers, staff, volunteers.

--Commitment to artistic excellence, inclusion, accessibility, and child safety.

--Availability for regular rehearsal, performances, and occasional evening or weekend events.

--Ability to pass required background and safeguarding checks.

 

PREFERRED

--Demonstrated experience directing children or youth choirs.

--Bachelor’s degree in choral conducting, music education, vocal performance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

--Piano proficiency sufficient to support rehearsals

--Interest in arranging music or adapting repertoire for developing voices

--Familiarity with trauma-informed, culturally responsive, or inclusive teaching practices.

 

Rehearsals and Concerts

--Weekly rehearsals begin in late August and conclude in mid-May.

--Rehearsals are Tuesdays 4:00-5:00 in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. Expected to be at rehearsal space by 3:00 to help monitor singers who arrive early; and to remain until all singers are picked up.

--Three scheduled concerts per season: October, December, May.
