2026  Winter Theatre Arts Camp for Kids

A Thousand Cranes
By Kathryn Schultz Miller

Directed by Thomas Putnam
For kids in grades 3 - 9
Based on the true story of a young girl in Japan following the dropping of the atomic bomb,
this story is different from our typical winter camps. It is not a musical in the usual sense, and it is much more serious in nature. There is little choreography, and there will be instruments played. Students should be aware that this is a departure from our usual camps and should consider whether they can commit to a play like this.

The camp is held twice, first for those in the Northern Tier School District and then for those in the Southern Tier School District and Wellsboro Area School District. Links to the registration form for each camp are below.

NTSD Camp in Elkland
All rehearsals/ performances at Clark Wood School, Elkland

           and Saturday, January 10, from 9:30am - 1pm
Performances:  Friday, January 23 (School time matinee; tentative)
Friday, January 23, 7:00, public performance
Saturday, January 24 7:00, public performance

STSD/WASD Camp in Blossburg
All rehearsals/ performances at Blossburg Elementary School, Blossburg
Camp meets on February 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20 after school from 3:40-5:30pm
Public Performances:  Saturday, February 21, and Sunday, February 22, at 2:30pm

Rehearsals:
You are expected to be at all scheduled rehearsals. The basic times are 3:40-5:30.  Be very clear on your audition sheet to indicate any dates or times you absolutely cannot attend rehearsals. (It is possible that you will not be cast if you need to miss rehearsals.)

Responsibilities:
Line/song memorization. You will be expected to memorize lines/songs on your own.
Communication. You are expected to let the director know if there are any concerns, questions, conflicts of schedule etc.
Direct-ability. You are expected to allow yourself to be directed.
Costumes. You will be expected to provide most of your own contemporary costume, including soft-soled shoes.
Rehearsal behavior.  Respectful (of others; of facility), attentive, positive, committed.

Finances:
The Winter Theatre Arts Camp is offered at no cost to campers due to a generous grant from the Deerfield Charitable Trust for the NTSD Camp, and from the Laurel Heath Foundation for the STSD/WASD camp. Each camper receives a tee shirt, script, instruction. The cost for the public performances is Pay-What-You-Can.

Though the cast can be fairly large, we may not be able to cast everyone who auditions. Behavioral issues, lack of motivation or cooperation may result in a student being released from the opportunity for participation. Also, if there are too many conflicts with rehearsal times, it is likely the student will not be able to participate.
